ISO New England - ISO New England is a regional transmission organization (RTO), serving Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. ISO New England meets the electricity demands of the region's economy and people by fulfilling three primary responsibilities: Minute-to-minute reliable operation of New England's bulk electric power system, providing centrally dispatched direction for the generation and flow of electricity across the region's interstate high-voltage transmission lines and thereby ensuring the constant availability of electricity for New England's residents and businesses. Development, oversight and fair administration of New England's wholesale electricity marketplace, through which bulk electric power has been bought, sold and traded since 1999. These competitive markets provide positive economic and environmental outcomes for consumers and improve the ability of the power system to meet ever-increasing demand efficiently. Management of comprehensive bulk electric power system and wholesale markets' planning processes that address New England's electricity needs well into the future. ISO New England is an independent, not-for-profit corporation. To effectively carry out its charge, the company, its Board of Directors and its 400 employees have no financial interest or ties to any company doing business in the region's wholesale electricity marketplace. Dr. Vamsi Chadalavada is senior vice president and chief operating officer and is responsible for System Operations, Wholesale Markets Development and Operations, System Planning, Information Services and Program Management. He previously served as the company's Senior vice president, Market and System Solutions and was responsible for Wholesale Markets Development, Information Services and Program Management. Before joining ISO New England in 2004, Dr. Chadalavada held a number of positions at Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution, most recently as vice president and general manager of Siemens' Energy Management and Information Systems (EMIS). In that position, he was responsible for operations, services, development, sales and marketing Siemens' EMIS in North America and select regions of Europe, Asia and South America.

Hung-po Chao Director, Market Strategy and Analysis ISO New England Dr. Hung-po Chao is Director, Market Strategy and Analysis, at the ISO New England in the United States. From 2005 to 2008, he was Director, Market Monitoring, at the ISO. Before joining the ISO, Dr. Chao held various research management positions responsible for research areas of energy and environmental risk analysis and power market design at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and was a Consulting Professor at Stanford University. In 1988, he received the Franz Edelman Award from the Institute of Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS) for outstanding achievement in management science and operations research. Dr. Chao is an international expert on electric energy and environment issues, specialized in electricity pricing, economic and risk analysis, and market design and strategy. He has been a policy consultant to the management of private companies and public agencies around the world, including Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), Bonneville Power Authority (BPA), Southern Company (SO), Electricite de France (EDF), Polish Power Grid Company (PSE), Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Kyushu Electric Power Company (KEPCO), Korean Electric Power Company (KEPCO), and Taiwan Power Company (TPC). Dr. Chao is the author and co-author of over sixty published papers and three books. Dr. Chao holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

As vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary, Raymond W. Hepper is the principal legal advisor for ISO New England. Mr. Hepper has 30 years of legal experience. Before joining ISO New England in 2004, he was employed by the firm of Pierce Atwood LLP representing utilities and clients in complex energy transactions and served as managing director of legal and regulatory affairs for Central Maine Power Company.

Kathryn J. Jackson, Ph.D., is Senior Vice President and ChiefTechnology Officer at Westinghouse Electric Company. Before being named to that position in early 2009, she served as Vice President of Strategy, Research, and Technology. Ms. Jackson previously spent 17 years at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), where she held various executive positions, including Vice President, Technology Advancements; Senior Vice President and Executive Vice President, respectively, in its Resource Group; and most recently as Executive Vice President, River System Operations and Environment. Prior to joining TVA, she worked for Alcoa and began her career at Westinghouse. Dr. Jackson currently serves on the advisory committees of the Sloan Foundation's Electricity Industry Center and Carnegie Mellon University's Institute for Complex Engineered Systems.

Prof. Kassakian is Director of the MIT Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from MIT, and prior to joining the MIT faculty, served a tour of duty in the US Navy. He is the Founding President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, and is the recipient of the IEEE Centennial Medal, the IEEE William E. Newell Award, the IEEE Power Electronics Society's Distinguished Service Award, and the IEEE Millennium Medal. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has published extensively in the areas of power electronics, education and automotive electrical systems, and is a co-author of the textbook Principles of Power Electronics.

Stephen J. Rourke is vice president, System Planning for ISO New England, having previously served as the company's director, Reliability & Operations Services. A former manager of the REMVEC control center in Westborough, MA and former manager of marketing operations for Northeast Utilities/Select Energy Inc., Mr. Rourke has 30 years of experience in operations and planning of New England's bulk power system. Mr. Rourke is responsible for overseeing the Regional System Plan, analyzing new infrastructure projects, implementing the generator interconnection process, developing findings for allocating transmission costs, and supporting New England's capacity markets. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Gordon van Welie is President and Chief Executive Officer of ISO New England Inc. (ISO NE), having previously served as the ISO NE's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Recently Mr. van Welie has directed ISO NE initiatives to analyze renewable power integration and pursue smart grid technology applications. He also serves as a Member of the ISO NE's Board of Directors and is a prior Chair of the ISO/RTO Council. He joined ISO NE from Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution LLC, where he served as Vice President and General Manager of the Power Systems Control Division and was responsible for delivering and supporting power system automation and information technology solutions for electric companies. Before moving to Siemens, Mr. van Welie held the position of Chief Engineer at ESKOM, South Africa's electric utility based in Johannesburg. Mr. van Welie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

2009-01-27 - Con Edison to Receive $136 Million in Smart Grid Stimulus Funding Consolidated Edison, Inc. (Con Edison) [NYSE: ED] will receive $136 million in smart grid stimulus funds from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), it was announced today. The federal stimulus money would help fund a smart grid program for customers served by Consolidated Edison Company of New York and Orange & Rockland Utilities. The Con Edison program is one of 100 projects that will share $3.4 billion in Smart Grid Investment Grant awards announced earlier today by President Barack Obama. “I want to commend President Obama, Governors Paterson and Corzine, and all of our legislative leaders, for supporting investments in revolutionary technology that will enhance the reliability of our nation’s electric grid, while giving consumers better information to use energy more efficiently,” said Kevin Burke, chairman, president, and CEO of Con Edison. “We will put the smart grid stimulus funds to work immediately for 9 million New Yorkers.” A smart grid integrates information and communication technology into electricity generation, delivery, and consumption, making systems cleaner, safer, and more reliable and efficient. This award for smart grid technologies will help promote economic vitality and new employment opportunities complementing other investments that Con Edison is making in the electric delivery system. The stimulus funds will broaden the scope of Con Edison’s existing smart grid efforts to modernize the electric grid in the most complex energy market in America. The company is already testing various technologies in a smart grid pilot project in Queens.
