China - Energy and Investing

China

Home Page

This section of the website contains information about the Energy Industry in China - with a focus on investing and technology.  China is not required to implement the Kyoto Treaty based on its status as a developing nation.  However, China is just now (2008) surpassing the United States as the #1 emitter of greenhouse gases.  China has an energy goal of improving overall energy efficiency in 2010 by 20% over 2005 levels - 4% per year.  Electricity consumption per capita in China is about 1,700 KW/H per year - about 20% of the worlds most developed economies.

In 2005, China produced 80.6% of its energy requirement from coal, 13.2% from oil, 3.4% from natural gas, 2.5% from hydropower, and .3% from nuclear.  Its energy production has increased an average of 12.7% per year during 2003-2005, outpacing the 10% average annual growth rate of GDP. As a result of the high energy demand in recent years, China’s index of energy self sufficiency has dropped from 1.0 in 2001 to 0.95 in 2004.  Coupled with the growing environmental problems, this growing reliance on imported energy resources lead to increased emphasis on energy conservation and renewable energy in the 11th Five Year Plan (2006-2010) and the enactment of the Renewable Energy Law in 2006.
